Q: How do I reset a tripped circuit breaker or an AFCI breaker?

A: Go to your electrical panel and find the circuit breaker or AFCI breaker that is in the off position.  The off position is anything that is not in the on position.  Not all tripped circuit breakers will be in the complete off position. To reset the circuit breaker, push the lever all the way to the OFF position then all the way back to the ON position.  You will hear it click when it has been located back to the ON position.
An AFCI breaker (shown right) is identified by the test button.  You can test to make sure your AFCI breaker is working properly with this test button.  When the breaker is in the ON position push the TEST button.  The breaker should trip.  Follow above instructions to reset.

Q: How do I find the location of the tripped GFCI outlet and how do I reset the GFCI?

A: Kitchen Location: There is a minimum of 2 GFCI outlets generally located near the counter-top backsplash area.  These GFCI outlets are controlling the remainder of your kitchen counter-top outlets.
Bathroom Location: Ususally 1 GFCI outlet is countrolling all the bathroom outlets in your home.  The GFCI is commonly located in the bathroom closest to your electrical panel.
Garage/ Unfinished Area/ Exterior Location: Usually these areas are controlled by 1 GFCI outlet. This GFCI outlet will be found in the area that is closest to your electrical panel.

To Reset your tripped GFCI outlet you must:

    *
Make sure nothing is plugged in the GFCI outlet or the outet(s) the GFCI may be controlling
    *
Push the RESET button on the GFCI

If this does not work make sure your circuit breaker has not tripped.

If your circuit breaker is on and your GFCI will not reset, please call us for an appointment.

TIP:

When your GFCI continually trips and is able to be reset, you must investigate what you are plugging in to these outlets.  More often there is something wrong with what you are plugging in and your GFCI outlet is doing exactly what it was intended to do, to detect any fault in the line and to shut off the flow of electrical current, thus PROTECTING YOU!
